FINDING NED – The First Steps
If someone wants to get better enough, and makes the changes required, then the mind and body can be uplifted. If our innate defenses are improved, then minimally there should be better response to judicious therapy. Obviously there are limits. We are still mortal. We won’t learn to fly or become super athletes necessarily. But there is good reason to believe we can make things better. I did…and this is an introduction to my tale.
I was diagnosed early 2004 with a B-cell malignancy located primarily within the bone marrow. As it turned out, I had a severely depressed level of natural killer (NK) cells and therefore much diminished immune responses that might deal with the intruders. This is consistent with known trends induced by a very driven lifestyle and an impulsive need for achievement. These things defined quality of life for many years. Intense cognitive therapy at one of the best institutions in the USA allowed me to see around those obstacles and follow my inner personality…to be set free. My NK cell levels have become normal and I achieved freedom from evident disease after about two years of careful attention to the things that mattered. This happened without resorting to intrusive medication or embracing unusual practices of any form.
My outlook and lifestyle were re-written totally. Dietary changes, yes. I adhere to a conservative Mediterranean diet; no alcohol and minimal levels of processed sugars; careful control over meat and animal fats. I have not attempted to find ‘salvation’ by appealing to odd beliefs, diets or supplements whilst leaving the basic canvas painted in all the wrong colors. This involves setting priorities and relinquishing some habitual behaviors or choices. But quality of life is about deep enjoyment. And it means enacting the freedom to follow those things that really turn you on! Most of the habits we encourage aren’t really that valuable if you look at them carefully. I have learned that you have to invest to succeed. You cannot simply pluck additional fruit from the forbidden tree – that I do know. NED, that is No Evident Disease, is my friend and I aim to keep things that way as long as I can!!!
